It’s a familiar premise with a much-needed update. Four best friends living in the NYC neighborhood of Harlem navigate the complexities of their 30s, which includes romantic troubles, challenging career prospects, and the general cacophony of living in the city. There’s Camille, an adjunct anthropology professor at Columbia who specializes in dating practices across cultures, but can’t seem to figure out her own love life. Tye is a successful entrepreneur who launched a queer dating app, but won’t let her guard down enough to forge a true connection with the right woman. Fashion designer Quinn is a hopeless romantic, and as such often has her naïveté get the better of her — but at least her sizable trust fund is always there to cushion her landing. Lastly, there’s ambitious singer/actress Angie, who also benefits from Quinn’s inheritance by way of living as her rent-free roommate. Though all four friends come from different walks of life, it’s clear that their collective bond is stronger than any individual struggle the girls go through.

Tracy Oliver is the creator behind “Harlem,” who also wrote the movies “Barbershop: The Next Cut” (2016), “Girls Trip” (2017), and “Little” (2019). Additionally, Oliver has the distinction of having created/written another hit TV show, that being BET’s “First Wives Club.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Oliver offers some insight behind her inspiration for making “Harlem”:
“There just wasn’t a lot of like Black female friendship stories on the air, and those have always been my favorites…Usually what I do when there’s something missing that I really want to see is I just decide, okay, well I’ll just write it. So I did.”
You simply have to appreciate that level of drive and dedication when it comes to manifesting what you want to see on screen.
